More game sales–Humble Indie Bundle #2 (& #1)

Maybe it’s because I’m supposed to be studying, I’m in a mood to blog about game sales.

Besides the crazy sale over at Steam, there are also quite a few acclaimed indie games on sale as a bundle. It’s pay what you want, so you can be as cheap as paying $0.01 to get 5 games: Braid, Machinarium, Osmos, Cortex Command, Revenge of the Titans.

But wait, pay more than the average ($7.39 now) and get last year’s bundle #1 too! World of Goo, Aquaria, Gish, Lugaru HD, Penumbra Overture and Samorost 2. 11 games for less than $8? That’s really a steal!

Why you should get it

It’s DRM free – you’re free to install on as many computers as you want, no ties and restrictions (please don’t pirate it though, it’s so cheap). And you can choose to donate to charities – the EFF and Child’s Play Charity.

Yeah right, like that’s the main reason people buy games :P Seriously, the games are good. My favourites are Machinarium, World of Goo and Braid. The gameplay is good enough to attract casual players (like me), and they make you think.

Mini reviews

Machinarium

Machinarium02

Genre: Point and click adventure game
What’s good: Beautiful art, great music, challenging puzzles. It has a nice way of telling the story without spoken dialog too.

Braid

Braid
Genre: Platformer. I tend to think of it as Super Mario with a lot of brain work involved. You get to reverse time so you don’t need to worry about dying. As the game progresses, you realize that sometimes, to get the puzzle piece, you have to do things like die first and reverse :) There’s more types of time manipulation too, but I won’t spoil you.

What’s good: Beautiful art, great music, challenging puzzles. (Hey, that’s the same sentence from Machinarium! :P)

Hmm, I’ll add in the review for the World of Goo later. In the meantime, grab a copy of the Humble Indie Bundle(s) before the sale ends. 3 days and 4 hours left, so till X’mas. Merry X’mas everyone!
ETA: The mini review of World of Goo, as promised.

Genre: Puzzle. You have to build structures using goo balls to reach the destination (a pipe! Where does it lead?). Definitely a must play if you like civil engineering or physics – the structures will fall over if built improperly.
What’s good: Hints given by signs have a dark sense of humor. Certain levels give a manic energy nicely complemented by the music. Did I mention cute goo balls?

I've tried Rainmeter before but it never stuck because I didn't really get the point of it. That is, until I read the Lifehacker primer and it clicked together for me - it's widgets! It's just like Yahoo Widgets (is anyone still using these?) and Windows Gadgets, except you can get all the widgets ("skins") in a matching col...

How To Find Out How Easy A Certain Japanese Text Would Be For You

Are you trying to up your Japanese reading skills? Have a set of electronic reading materials, but don't know which one to start with? One way to rate them is by how easy they would be for you to read, so you can pick the level you're comfortable with. To do that, you'll first need a text list of words you already know, and then use that as an input file to the Japanese Text Frequency Analyzer tool. An easy way to get the list is to use the Morphman plugin in Anki (I'm assuming you're using Anki. Find out how to export the list if you use another SRS/flashcard system). What you'll need: Anki Morphman Anki Plugin cb's Japanese Text Analysis Tool Steps: 1. Ensure your database of known words is up to date by forcing a Morphman Recalc. You can do this by using the Anki tools menu or the default shortcut Ctrl+M. If there are words you already know that are not in Anki, see this section of MorphMan Wiki . To make things easier for m...

Where Google+ is better than Facebook

The new kid on the social networking block, Google+ has been in field trial for just over a month. After using it actively this past week or so, I thought I'd write down the things that I like about it. Before I start, a disclaimer: this is  not  a post bashing Facebook, nor am I claiming that Google+ is the best social network out there. This is meant to be a list of the details that make me lean ever so slightly (all right, a lot) towards Google+. Some terminology before we start (Facebook on the left, Google+ on the right), wall/news feed = stream friend list = circles Here's the list of places where I think Google+ is better than Facebook, starting with the smaller details before moving to the larger differences between them. Skip to the end for the tl;dr version. 1. Editable posts and comments Google+ allows you to edit as well as delete your posts and comments. There is no time limit, and the time of last edit is displayed. ...
