Another Rainmeter setup

Because I like dark wallpapers too. Current desktop Alternative wallpaper Details 10 Foot HUD YBoris edit skin for the time and date Enigma Now Playing skin Dynamic quotes skin by me. I've tried Rainmeter before but it never stuck because I didn't really get the point of it. That is, until I read the Lifehacker primer and it clicked together for me - it's widgets! (I highly recommend the article, especially the section on glossary.) It's just like Yahoo Widgets (is anyone still using these?) and Windows Gadgets, except you can get all the widgets ("skins") in a matching col

What I've been up to

I got distracted in my quest to stay productive this summer (again). What I ended up with Yup, I customized my Windows appearance. What I used: Rainmeter for the motivational quotes, date/time, todo list and now playing widget. ClearScreenSharp theme Ecqlipse 2 icons Token animated start orb Wallpaper by 彎彎 Listed out it seems simple, but I had to do quite a bit of reading to learn how to use custom themes :\ If you're interested, you can start with the Glass Onion theme which comes with detailed instructions and the tools needed (UxStyle and Start Button Changer etc.) Sidenote: reading the rainmeter tutorials then prompted me to learn a little about regex, and to find a good enough regex to scrape my anime in XBMC. I'm easily distracted ^^'

Where Google+ is better than Facebook

The new kid on the social networking block, Google+ has been in field trial for just over a month. After using it actively this past week or so, I thought I'd write down the things that I like about it. Before I start, a disclaimer: this is  not  a post bashing Facebook, nor am I claiming that Google+ is the best social network out there. This is meant to be a list of the details that make me lean ever so slightly (all right, a lot) towards Google+. Some terminology before we start (Facebook on the left, Google+ on the right), wall/news feed = stream friend list = circles Here's the list of places where I think Google+ is better than Facebook, starting with the smaller details before moving to the larger differences between them. Skip to the end for the tl;dr version. 1. Editable posts and comments Google+ allows you to edit as well as delete your posts and comments. There is no time limit, and the time of last edit is displayed. Facebook does no

Musings on the Keyboard - the Insert key

Located in the top right region of the keyboard, the Insert key is quite underused. When Insert is activated, anything you type will overwrite the original text. Annoying if turned on unknowingly, but useful in some situations, such as when you're batch replacing text. It'll save you the extra keystrokes to backspace/delete. Watch the screencast below to get what I mean. I probably use it most when I'm coding and just making minor changes. How to know if insert is turned on: your text cursor changes to a box or a horizontal line instead of a vertical line. Another interesting use of the Insert key is to copy and paste .

Why I Fell in Love with Fringe

Occasionally I get obsessed with a new story, be it manga or TV that I just can’t help the urge to keep thinking and talking about it. Since Fullmetal Alchemist has ended, Fringe has filled the void. I really, really want to spread the love for this US TV series that’s woefully relatively unknown. The premise of this show: FBI agent Olivia Dunham, mad scientist (really- he was locked up in a mental institution for 17 years) Dr. Walter Bishop and his son Peter Bishop work in the Fringe division, which investigates cases involving fringe science - weird and often gory pseudo-science stuff like liquefied brains, mind control, giant virus slugs etc. Initially I was not very invested in this series – I was wary of how a vague mysterious bad force seems to be behind the incidents (called “The Pattern”), and the first few episodes sort of felt like they weren’t sure where the plot was going. I was worried that it would be unresolved in the end and I’ve been burnt by other shows like John
